Identified between a regular filling and a crown, a dental inlay or onlay can restore a damaged or decayed tooth. Used on molars and pre-molars, a dental inlay covers the concave center of a tooth while an onlay covers the rounded, upper edges of a tooth. Like dental fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays can be made in a variety of materials — composite resin, porcelain, and metal. Dentist Dr. Peter Russo can help South Yarmouth, MA patients better understand fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays so they can make an informed decision about how to treat their tooth at Bass River Dental.
"The best staff. So professional and helpful!!"- T.D. / Facebook / May 26, 2021
"After more than 6 months, Aspen Dental could not make my dentures fit. I fired them and chose the closest dentist to my home. It was Bass River.... after going toothless for so long and making so many trips to Aspen for adjustments that did nothing, I had lost hope. Dr Pete and crew not only managed to make my dentures wearable but they laugh at my jokes too! Thanks"- M.S. / Google / May 01, 2021
"As a new patient I found It was a wonderful, homey, friendly, down to earth office. Felt very comfortable and well cared for. The office staff, Dr. Russo and my hygienist Kelly Holland were terrific. She was thorough, professional, knowledgeable and kind. It was a very positive experience all around. Would recommend this dental office with no reservations."- J.C. / Google / Apr 30, 2021
"The best experience I’ve had with a dental clinic in a very long time. From reception to the hygienist- which she did the most comprehensive and deep cleaning of my teeth EVER. The dentist is easy going and skilled. Very pleasant experience even through extractions. The dental assistant is so efficient that the doctor rarely has to ask for something. She has it in hand before he has to. Unlike my last dentist who had to ask (seemingly unassured) what he needed next. Sometimes leaving me alone to search for what was needed from another room. I’m very happy I have found #bassriverdental @bassriverdental to restore the multiple problems my last dentist left me with. They also take dental insurance !!! Great experience all around. A dental inlay or onlay is a good choice if you have a damaged tooth or a large cavity that is too big to get filled, but does not need the full coverage of a crown. During your examination, we will use your digital x-rays to decide on the best treatment for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is selected, we will go over the available materials that will best suit your needs. You might also discuss whether you would prefer a direct restoration (an inlay or onlay made at our office with CEREC technology while you wait) or an indirect restoration made at a dental laboratory.
What To Expect
After applying local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, we will start by removing areas of decay. Stronger methods of sedation can be used if you have anxiety or a strong gag reflex. Once the tooth is cleaned, impressions will be made of the tooth. If you are receiving an indirect restoration, a temporary filling will be placed until it is prepared. Once your restoration is ready, we will carefully place and bond it onto your tooth. We may polish the edges or adjust the fit so your tooth is properly covered and feels comfortable.
If only local anesthesia was used, you should be able to leave after the procedure and return to your normal day. You may feel some discomfort, inflammation, or sensitivity for a few days after your inlay or onlay is placed. Please contact Bass River Dental if you have any concerns after your procedure. Your dental inlay or onlay should be cleaned just like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. You should schedule annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at Bass River Dental so that the health and wear of your restoration can be assessed. With proper care, it should last for many years before replacing or repairing.
Inlays and onlays are a common treatment for dental decay and other damage, so they are usually covered by dental insurance. Our office will contact your insurance provider to determine your specific coverage before calculating your out-of-pocket costs. We can customize your treatment with different materials to fit your budget. During your consultation, a member of our financial team will go over cost estimates and payment methods we accept, including medical financing.
