When it comes to your health, you need to be proactive with dental problems by getting them diagnosed and treated before they become larger issues. This is why it is important to schedule an annual dental exam for you and your family. While teeth are superficially examined during a cleaning, an exam provides a much more in-depth analysis. Dental exams at Bass River Dental evaluate your general and oral health by checking for tooth decay, signs of oral cancer, and other diseases. Dentist Dr. Peter Russo will determine your need for treatments and check your bite and jaw for problems. A series of x-rays will also be taken to get better insight into the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. If you live in or near South Yarmouth, MA, schedule an annual dental examination for yourself and your family at Bass River Dental.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer includes any abnormal growth of cells in the mouth, including the gums, jawbone, lips, tongue, throat, and salivary glands. Every dental exam at Bass River Dental includes an oral cancer screening to look for early signs including sores, inflammation, lumps, and lesions. The throat and jaw will also be examined for any abnormalities. If any areas of concern are found, a biopsy may be performed or you will be referred to a specialist for further care.
Dental Exam Reviews
"I'm a new patient, and it's been a very long time, since I've even seen a dentist, so I'd prepared myself for a pretty horrible experience, figuring that I'd need a lot of work done. I hate having things in my mouth and don't do well with pain, at all. So, I wound up being very pleasantly surprised. It's a nice, quiet office, and everyone there - I won't mention names in a review - is very welcoming and professional. Dental technologies and procedures have changed a whole lot, and I was in and out in practically no time, and no pain at all!"- P.M. / Demandforce / Oct 11, 2018
"I have become accustomed to the perfection practiced by Dr. Rebecca Paglia at Paglia Family Dental in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Rebecca was the one who referred me to Dr. Carlson's practice when my wife and I moved to the Cape permanently. Rene in the office has been pleasant and very helpful in getting me started as a new patient, and my only other interaction so far has been with Kelly. As I told her and Dr. Carlson, she's the best Hygenist I've ever had! With my front tooth dental implant and all the issues that came before that (WAY too many to mention), with my mother as a dental assistant for Dr. Francis Paglia founder of the family practice, and with years waiting hours to be seated in the dental chair (for Dr. Francis Paglia, many years ago!), I appreciate being taken on time and being welcomed as a valued patient. My wife Nancy is in the process of filling out her application form to become a patient at my suggestion.Thank you for your excellent customer service!Sincerely,Walter J. Best Candidates for Dental Exam
South Yarmouth, MA patients of all ages should get an annual dental exam. Many common problems, like gum disease (the biggest cause of tooth loss), don’t have symptoms you can notice. When problems are caught early, the better your chances will be for a successful treatment with less invasive options.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that all children go to the dentist before their first birthday. Our dental team can help with issues like teething, baby bottle tooth decay, and the use of pacifiers. The team at Bass River Dental can help you understand how to care and clean your baby's mouth so they start healthy habits early — this will also help them throughout their life. Dental exams are also important for children as they get older as their mouth develops.
What To Expect
Your appointment will start with an overall assessment of your teeth, gums, tongue, roof of your mouth, inside your cheeks, throat, and other oral checkpoints. This includes looking for signs of oral cancer throughout your mouth. X-rays will be taken, and we will screen for abnormal tissue in the gums. We will also evaluate your head, neck, and jaw, including your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and bite. We will then talk about anything found and how to best treat it. Any health problems you have, medications you may be taking, and how they might impact your oral health by causing dry mouth and tooth decay will be evaluated and discussed. Finally, we will examine any prosthetics you have, like dentures or bridges, to check the fit and wear.
The follow-up period will depend on your oral health. If no issues are identified, then the only follow-up would be to continue a regimen of dental health including brushing and flossing twice a day, along with annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at Bass River Dental. If an issue is found that needs to be addressed, options will be discussed and scheduled.
Since a dental exam is so important to your oral health, it is typically covered by dental insurance. Our office will work with your dental insurance company to determine your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. If you do not have dental insurance, Bass River Dental accepts many payment options, including medical financing. We are happy to work with you to make sure you can afford good oral health.
